RYAN JAMES

Founder and CEO

Ryan James is the Founder and CEO of Pacific Standard Environmental. Ryan works with businesses that utilize Continuous Emissions Monitoring Systems (CEMS) to monitor air emissions from combustion sources to ensure reliable compliance with governmental regulation. Since 2006, Ryan has expanded the business from CEMS maintenance and consulting to full CEMS and custom systems engineering/integration, including general environmental consulting with a customer base that extends from hospitals to the largest peaking power plant in the country. Ryan has established himself as an expert in the field of Continuous Emissions Monitoring and his knowledge base is well respected within the industry.

Ryan’s technical education in the U.S. Air Force as a Biomedical Equipment Technician prepared him well for his career in the civilian sector. He earned multiple awards in leadership, Achievement medals, and a Commendation medal. Ryan went on to earn a degree in Biomedical Equipment Technology, becoming a Certified Biomedical Equipment Technician (CBET). He used his expertise as a CEMS Field Service Engineer at Horiba Instruments, and later as a Power Plant Technician/Supervisor for Stewart & Stevenson.

Ryan's Air Force career and corporate experience have given him a well-rounded perspective in the administration of technical and customer service, as he continues to lead PSE to greater heights, fostering excellence for customers and employees.

AMANDA HUGHES

Chief Operations Officer

Amanda Hughes is an accomplished and versatile executive with a strong background in operations and financial management. As the COO at Pacific Standard Environmental, she brings a proven ability to build strong teams, negotiate effectively, and oversee multiple functions. Amanda has been instrumental in driving the growth and success of several service organizations.

As a dynamic leader with exceptional communication skills, Amanda excels in strategic planning and executing business plans, ensuring key performance objectives are met and effective processes are developed and followed. Her innovative problem-solving abilities have allowed her to navigate unique challenges and capitalize on growth opportunities in highly competitive landscapes.

Amanda holds a Juris Doctor (J.D.) from the University of the Pacific, McGeorge School of Law, and a Bachelor's degree in English/Humanities from the University of Southern California. As an active member of the California State Bar, she brings legal expertise to her executive roles.

MICHELLE NELSON

Vice President of Sales

Michelle Nelson is the VP of Sales at Pacific Standard Environmental. Michelle joins PSE with 15 years of CEMS and industry experience. She began her career in the CEMS world by joining a Field Service team for a CEMS company. Her job was to sell service contracts and organize the department overall. Michelle was then promoted to Inside Sales for a period of time and was then promoted to Regional Sales Manager for the Western region. During that time, Michelle acquired CEMS and industry knowledge by observing field technicians and learning from industry engineers and experts in the field. She gained extensive application education by visiting and working with facility personnel in various applications like power, petrochemical plants, cement plants, wastewater treatment facilities, landfills, waste to energy, steel, glass, and other industrial plants. She also received technology training direct from suppliers and industry seminars she attended over the years. She has experience in helping companies to grow and gain market share in different market sectors.

She sincerely loves visiting any customer facility and walking down the equipment (and even climbing ladders and stairs to see equipment at the top of stacks). She has built long lasting relationships with clients over the years and enjoys fostering those relationships and interactions.

Michelle will head up PSE’s Sales Team and will help PSE to grow exponentially in the years to come. Michelle has a Bachelor of Arts Degree in English/Literature and Master of Business Administration.

 

LUCAS KARNES

Director of Operations

Lucas Karnes is the Director of Operations at Pacific Standard Environmental, “a renowned continuous emission monitoring systems (CEMS) company.” With a robust career spanning over two decades, Lucas brings to the table a wealth of experience in operational change management, risk mitigation, and process optimization.

Prior to joining Pacific Standard Environmental, Lucas served in several leadership roles with the US Air Force, where he honed his skills in managing large-scale operations, coordinating technical teams, and effectively utilizing multi-million-dollar budgets. He spearheaded a variety of initiatives that resulted in enhanced efficiency, operational growth, and technological advancements.

Now Lucas oversees the management of the engineering and service departments, working closely with the Chief Operating Officer and other executives to scale the business while maintaining the highest standards of customer service. Lucas' mission at Pacific Standard Environmental is to harness his unique blend of skills and experience to further the company's growth, promote operational excellence, and ensure that Pacific Standard Environmental continues to be a great place to work!

Lucas holds an MBA from the University of California, Los Angeles, a Master of Military Operational Art and Science from Air University, and a Bachelor of Science in Management from the United States Air Force Academy. He is also a certified Project Management Professional.

MATT SWANSON

Technical Account Manager

Matt Swanson has been involved in mobile and stationary source emission measurement industry for the last 25 years. He started his emissions career as a test operations technician at California Analytical Instruments in Orange, CA, managing testing and laboratory programs for automotive applications as well as commissioning new laboratory equipment from around the world including many trips to China, Korea, and Europe. He later transitioned to sales, ascending to positions as International Operations Manager and Vice President of Sales. Matt assisted in the development of several innovative products as well as providing training courses on chemiluminescence, non-dispersive infrared, flame ionization, photoacoustic spectroscopy, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. In 2018, he left California Analytical Instruments to work with VIM Technologies in Maryland as the District Manager for the Western United States. At VIM, Matt used his knowledge of government regulations to assist clients in petroleum refining, pulp and paper, cement, university co-generation, and power plants, in complying with local, state, and federal emissions regulations. Now at Pacific Standard Environmental as an Account Manager, Matt oversees emissions systems design, environmental CEMS consulting, DAHS audits and technical training of new and existing staff.

Matt holds a degree from the University of California at San Diego in Philosophy, and minors in Physics and Japanese Studies. He often presents at the Stationary Source Sampling and Analysis for Air Pollution (SSSAAP) conference and is focused on helping PSE become a leader in providing instrumentation service and support for multiple industries.
